A business development and financing mechanism supporting the conservation, protection and restoration of coral reefs and associated ecosystems through commercially viable projects that deliver positive outcomes for reefs.
Project Summary:
The Mesoamerican Reef is a vital marine ecosystem supporting biodiversity, coastal protection, and local livelihoods. However, it faces threats from overfishing, pollution, and climate change. By combining blended finance mechanisms, robust monitoring conducted by HRHP to ensure the effectiveness and impact of conservation efforts., and capacity-building programs, MAR+Invest aims to bridge the gap in the relationship between entrepreneurship ecosystems, conservation efforts, and commercial capital by developing and financing enterprises that generate both coral-positive outcomes and market returns.
During the three phases of the project (Inception, Consolidation, Growth), the collaboration between MARFund, Sureste Sostenible, New Ventures,Viwala and HRHP will join forces to identify and support market initiatives at various development stages, focusing on 18 prioritized Coastal and Marine Protected Areas (CMPA) in the region. MAR+Invest addresses the main challenges by investing in market-based solutions that promote reef conservation, ensuring the long-term sustainability and economic prosperity of the region.
During the Inception Phase we have:
- Geospatial Analysis: Completed comprehensive GIS analysis of coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds.
- Indicator Development: Established robust monitoring and evaluation frameworks in collaboration with the Global Fund for Coral Reefs (GFCR).
- King Crab Aquaculture: R&D consultancy significantly improved reproduction and survival of juveniles, setting the bases for the study of a business plan
- Acceleration Program: Supported innovative projects through the MAR+Invest acceleration program, promoting best practices in tourism, conservation, and sustainable resource use.
- Investment Pipeline: HRHP has supported the teams of New Ventures and Viwala to conduct environmental impact assessments of the businesses being approached
